A screening is basically a protocol to ‘size up ‘ an athlete. We are looking for physical tests to evaluate the relevant information that will predict the injury risk an athlete carries, any limitations to technique and give a course of action to remove barriers that may prevent peak performance. To do this in triathalon we need to understand the techniques and mechanics of the 3 disciplines and develop testing that is as simple as possible, can be measured and compared across the athletic population. At Physiohealth we have been screening swimmers from junior to Olympians for 20 years and recreational and elite triathletes for the last 12 years. With 3 very different components the triathalon screening takes approximately 45 minutes. We allow 1 hour. Athletes who attend a screening at Physiohealth get the testing, a thorough summary of where they sit in regards to flexibility and basic strength/control required and some basic exercises to remedy their deficiencies. It is a great way to get some information that will either explain ongoing injury problems or even better prevent them happening. It can lead to a constructive physio-athlete relationship that will help prevent annoying injuries and enable optimum results.
